EDGI 550: Educating for Peace Social Justice and Human Rights

The School of Education would like to share this summer quarter interdisciplinary course opportunity with the general graduate student population. EDGI 550: Educating for Peace, Social Justice, and Human Rights (CRN: 41720) is an online course which will be taught this summer by SoE PhD student, Katie Elliott, who is currently on a Fulbright in Finland. She is customizing the course this summer to draw heavily on current events and global conflicts as well as integrating the work she is currently doing in Finland. This is a great opportunity for students across our programs to engage on critical and timely topics and to promote global citizenship and social justice within the University community.
Course Description:
Are you wondering how Russia's invasion of the Ukraine could have been prevented?
Ever worried that schools seem to be ignoring huge problems like racism, climate justice and LBGTQI+ issues?
Unsure how to include these things in your own teaching?
This course provides an overview of peace education and human rights education including history, theories, concepts and pedagogy. Peace and human rights education programs are situated within the larger field of global and international education as well as within a context of education for social change. By exploring both theory and practice as well as case studies, research, and lesson plans, students will examine the role of education within formal institutions, non-formal community-based organization and non-governmental organizations in addressing issues of violence, conflict, and security while promoting social justice, human rights and peace. Students engage in applied learning activities through the construction of peace education initiatives and curriculum.
About the Instructor:
Fulbright-EDUFI grantee in Finland, Kathlyn Elliott researches the role that education and schooling plays in the prevention of violent extremism. Her research interests also include global citizenship education, teacher advocacy and activism, and education in emergencies. Kathlyn is a PhD candidate in Education Leadership.
